PUBLIC SCREENING AT THE WALKER

Congrats to all of the workshop particpants! Yesterday's screening was well attended - over 70 people packed into the Walker's Lecture Room to view all of the class projects. To be honest, I was really suprised to see that many people turnout for a student presetation. Being mentioned on woostercollective.com probably helped - thanks for the post wooster!

DAY #6 - PROJECTING OUTDOORS

Today, we fine tuned the videos that we created last week and projected them outdoors. It was pretty cold outside, but we ended up shooting 6 projects. The final projects will be shown at the Walker on Thursday night at 6 PM.

Here's some photos from various locations on Lake Street.

The first photo is a picture of Vlad and James setting up in front of Dunn Bros. Jessie created a video that talks about small coffee shops versus large corporate owned chains.

Nico wanted to project on a fast food chain, so we stopped at Arby's. This wall was right by the drive thru.

Maddy and Claire's video was projected on East Lake Street.

James' windmill video was projected on an abandoned gas station near Chicago and Lake.

PHOTOS/VIDEOS FROM DAY#5.

The class is going really well. Most of the projects are off the ground and running. We are looking forward to projecting these on buildings outside on Monday.

This is Vlad's back up video. He is going to continue working on his 2-D/3-D projection. Vlad, you might want to check into how holograms work.

Maddy and Claire collaborated on this piece. Do you guys have locations in mind for this projection. Perhaps a government building downtown? Buildings on Lake Street?

Monica created a video of herself shadowboxing. When we project the video Monica will attempt to fight the projection.

James created this stencil of windmills. He wants to project the video on the side of a parking garage or a place where there are a lot of cars. Obviously James is interested in highlighting sustainable energy as an alternative to cars and non-renewable resources.

Bailey choreographed this dance among the trees. She wants to project it on a government building downtown. She is really interested in juxtaposing nature and the city/peace and war.

Jessie sent me a video that she made at her work, a coffeehouse on 7th in Saint Paul called Rudie's.

We are thinking about projecting her class project in the alleyway shown in the video.

Day #4

Vlad, thanks for posting! I can see that other people on the class have been on the blog - you guys should post!

Made some progress yesterday. I am hoping everyone brings some footage to the class on Wednesday.

Here's some documentation of projections that Xavier has done in the past. One image is layered over another. I hope this gets you thinking about the image that you are projecting and what you are projecting on.

DAY #3

Today we talked through everyone's ideas, visited the library, and started to storyboard.

Nick showed us this Sigur Ros video. he wants to create the illusion of a character that jumps from building to building. Xavier talked to Nick about using his own body as a canvas.

James wants to create a large stencil that appears to be a blank screen until he pulls away the masking.

Bailey wants to project a sunrising and people embracing on the downtown jail.

Claire and Maddy are interested in using the Hennepin Ave. underpass (where the Greenway goes under Hennepin) as a location. They had talked about filming the light rail and projecting it.

Lauren talked about creating a piece that created the illusion of people walking through walls.

Nico had the idea of filming a dance party/horror film. He wants to project it in a busy area. I suggested the abandoned Schubert Theater.

Paris suggested using the backs of tombstones as a place to project.

Vlad wants to create the illusion of a 3-D object.

Bre and Whitney are working on a joint project about strip malls. Bre sees the suburbs as the future ghetto. I suggested checking out Jem Cohen's film Chain.

Monica wants to tackle the issue of body image using models.

Alex, if you are reading this, can you post your ideas? Sorry that I didn't get a chance to talk to you before the class was over.

DAY #2

Yesterday we visited the Walker’s new exhibition Heart of Darkness (HOD). HOD features the work of Ellen Gallagher, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Kai Althoff. Here are some links for you to check out.

We also talked about ideas that the class was interested in. James talked about a public project that he created featuring humans devolving into monkeys presented over the 94 tunnel. Lauren is interested in creating an urban legend/myth. Vlad wants to create a projection that appears to be 3-D. Nicholas said that he is inspired by a recent Sigur Ros video. Hayleigh wants to do something with projection on water or the appearance of walking on water. Bailey expressed the desire to make a politically/socially involved movie. Hopefully I listed the majority of the ideas presented. Anyway, please start thinking about what you want to do and bring your ideas to Monday’s class.

Ellen Gallagher

This is the film installation featuring the Super Boo (the blonde monster horror film) and Murmur: Watery Ecstatic (based on the mythical Black Atlantis). Make sure to poke around on the Art 21 website. and click on all the interactive features – there is a slide show & process feature – both worthwhile.

Thomas Hirschhorn

Cavemanman is the winding cave that leads through what appears to be a combination of a library and a shrine to pop culture.

If you have time check out the Artist Talk where Hirschhorn talks about his project Musée Précaire Albinet (the Precarious Museum of Albinet). Some of us talked about this project –Hirschhorn and the community built a museum out of cardboard and packing tape in a depressed neighborhood in Paris. Hirschhorn managed to work out a deal with Centre Pompidou to exhibit the works of Duchamp, Malevich, Beuys, Warhol, Dali, and Mondrian. Million dollar works of art shown in a shabby shack!

Kai Althoff

Althoff’s work is the installation that looks like a thrift store explosion. His work is filled with sexually charged imagery, real body fluids, and references to Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a Germany filmmaker whose films often featured openly gay characters.

DAY ONE: INTRO TO XAVIER'S WORK

During the first class, Xavier showed slides of his work and talked about his process. His love of subcultures and the people involved in them has led him to unusual people and interesting stories. Below are some of the works that he showed us in class.

After we looked at the slides, Xavier showed us his most recent video work. His inspiration for the first video project, Trafficking, came when he found holes cut into the walls overlooking the freeway. Using the wall as a stangnant projection screen, Xavier projected images of things that could be trafficked (drugs, humans, guns to name a few) over the cut out hole that created a window of speeding cars on the freeway.

The second video (the inspiration for the class) is a document of a projection on Lake Street of Xavier spraying painting a stencil in his studio. Was appears to be a man in the act of graffiti, is actually a projection of Xaiver spray painting in the studio.

Here's the general write up of the class:

Artist Xavier Tavera roams Lake Street projecting images of himself spray painting political stencils on the wall. What appears to be illegal, is legal, but begs the question, “what activities happen on the street that go undetected?” Graffiti, homelessness, or skateboarding - use these as subjects or come up with your own subjects to project. Work with Tavera to create films to project outdoors and learn about artists working with film in the public eye. Check out an article about Tavera in the July 12th City Pages.
